Remembering 9/11

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001 changed the nation and altered the course of events in the United States and around the world.  Most of you may be too young to truly remember that day: where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, and how it affected you.  Thus, what I would like you to do is facilitate a discussion regarding 9/11 with someone who does remember (i.e. your parents, an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, or a family friend etc.).  Ask them the following questions:
  • Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
  • How did you feel?
  • What was your immediate reaction?
  • Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
  • In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
After you have had this discussion, report back with your findings by responding to this blog post.  You have until Wednesday, September 14th to complete this assignment.

I interviewed my mom about her day on 911.
"Where were you and what were you doing during the terrorists' attacks?" "I was going to my husband's funeral in new york." "How did you feel?" "Distraught." "What was your immidiate reaction." "I called my new husband in Florida, to share my pain." "Is there anything else in particular about the day the day that stands out or that you can remember?" " I remember feeling worse being at a funeral, and then I recieve news that on the same day more lives were taken." "In what ways do you think that America and the world have changed in the past ten years?" "We have taken the issue more seriusly and have developed better protection. We also, have come together more, as a country."

Q1) Where were you and what were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?

A1) I was at work at Procter and Gamble up front at Human Resources when it came across the computer screen.

    Q2) How did you feel?

A2) I felt shocked, wasn't really sure what was really going on, confused.

Q3) What was your immediate reaction?

A3) Disbelief, I wanted to fight back somehow.

Q4) Is there anything else in particular about that day that stands out or that you can remember?

A4) We planted a bush in our front yard that day in remembrance of what happened. It's still there today, and even though other plants have died around it, it's still there.

Q5 In what ways do you think that America, and the world for that matter, have changed in the past ten years as a result?

A5) I feel like we've lost some of our freedom to choose where we want to go. Our security has gone up more. To help out, I've been to Iraq, and will soon be leaving for Afghanistan. It makes me feel good that I can help provide security for those who feel they have lost it due to the 9/11 attacks.

Me: Where were you when two towers went down?
Mom: Dad and I were heading to Chicago. We were looking at the Sears Tower in the skyline when it was announced that there were other planes in the air and they had to evacuate the tower.
Me: How did you feel when you found out about what was happening?
Mom: At first, I thought that the first plane hitting the towers was a serious accident. Then, once the second tower was hit, I was in shock and realized that we(America) were under attack.
Me: Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
Mom: For me it was the compassion that people around the world felt for us. I have friends in other countries that were also very frightened and shocked about what happened. 9/11 didn’t just affect America, it affected the world.
Me: In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
Mom: I think it has made us less willing to tolerate terrorism. I don’t believe that we( the world) will deal with it.

Hello, today i interviewed my mother, why so late you may think? Well I believed interviewing her on 911 may bring some more memories up, seeing all these TV shows today showing videos...

The first question was "Where were you and what were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?" Her responce was "I was downstairs in the office, doing paperwork while you were in the basement in the other room, watching cartoons, then dad came downstairs and told me to stop working and come upstairs now. I saw the news and i was confused what had happened"

The second question "How did you feel?" Her responce was "I felt weak and sad, also after the second tower was hit she felt "Why would anyone do this? what have we done to deserve this?"

The third question "What was your immediate reaction?" Her responce "I just sat down on the chair, I felt hopeless."

The fourth question "Is there anything else in particular about that day that stands out or that you can remember?" Her responce "Not that I could tell, all i did was call most of the people i knew, some people i couldn't reach so i began to cry and think about if they were attacked"

The final question (fifth) "In what ways do you think that America, and the world for that matter, have changed in the past ten years as a result?" Her responce "I think we have increased in defence and stuff, we may have learned to watch out. I think now we are more careful at airports. I remember when we could just go straight to the plane only having our luggage and coat checked. now we have a full body check."

Q5.)In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
A5.) After living in D.C., and getting to walk around so freely around the momunments , going back in 2005 was an eye opener. Every where we went there were metal dectectors. We never encountered that when we lived there from 1993 to 1998. Airport security has also become more strict.

My mom was the person I interviewed. She was at home on maternity leave with my little sister, who was 14 days old, she had just fallen asleep when my dad called and said the terrorist attacks happened. My mom thought he was joking, and when he convinced her it was happening she thought it must be an accident, but then the second plane hit and she knew it wasn’t. This made her feel worried. My little sister had a doctor’s appointment and she wasn’t sure if she should get me and my sister and brother out of school. Her immediate reaction was that it was an accident. She remembers that it was strangely quiet outside. There was no traffic at all. The television had no regular shows on at this time, it was either news, or channels not broadcasting at all. Airport security has changed. The TSA was created and now there are more restrictions on what you can carry on a plane, your ID’s must all match your documents, you have to take your shoes off to get through security. Her view of the world changed on that day.

I interviewed my mom. She was on maternity leave when it happened. My grandmother called her on the phone and was screaming "We are under attack, we are under attack." My mom didn't know what she was talking about since she had not turned on the TV that morning. Once she did turn on the TV, it was an angry, sad emotion that came over her. The disbelief that something like this could be conjured by other people was appalling. After the initial shock of what was happening, my mom woke my dad and told him that he wouldn't be sleeping much today. She told him to come watch the TV and after that, no words were spoken. Pure devastation set in.
According to my mom and dad, things have gotten much more intense with security in airports and public venues. My mom feels that there has been somewhat a lose of focus on the objective form the outcome of September 11.
